Frequently asked
What is Ostro?
Ostro is a sailing race timing and results app for iPhone and Android. The race officer records each finish with one tap as a boat crosses the line, and Ostro produces handicap-corrected results under YTC, IRC, Portsmouth Yardstick or one-design the moment the race ends, ready to publish to a public results page.
Does it work without mobile signal?
Yes. Timing and scoring happen entirely on the phone, so you can run a race from a committee boat or a remote start line with no signal. Results are published as soon as you have a connection again.
Can Ostro replace the results software my club uses now?
For timing and scoring handicap and one-design races on the day, and publishing the results, yes, and without a laptop. Some other software options are more complete today for things such as multi-start series scoring with discards. If there is something your club relies on, get in touch and tell us.
How are finish times captured?
Tap the finish button as a boat crosses the line. The time is recorded the instant your thumb lands, not when you lift it, and once captured it cannot be edited. You can always change which boat a finish belongs to, but never the time itself.
What is corrected time?
Handicap racing scales each boat’s elapsed time by its rating so different boats can be compared fairly. The app computes corrected times automatically, using some of the most common popular formats, and ranks the fleet the moment the race ends.
Which handicap schemes are supported?
YTC (Yacht Time Correction), IRC, Portsmouth Yardstick (PY) and one-design. A race is timed once and can be scored under any scheme the fleet holds ratings for, so you can switch between them on the results screen without multiple attempts at calculating finish times.
Can I score one race several ways?
Yes. Finish times are stored as facts, independent of any scheme, so the same race can produce a YTC table and an IRC table side by side.
Where is my data stored, and is it backed up?
Races you time are stored locally on your device, and timing and scoring need no account. That data is included in your device’s own backups according to your settings, and deleting the app removes it, so keep an export if you want to preserve results. If you sign in to publish results for a club, the races you publish are stored on our servers and shown on a public results page. See the Privacy Policy for details.
How do I get results out of the app?
Export a ranked, corrected-time table as text or CSV and share it through your device’s share sheet, into a message, an email or a spreadsheet.
Is there an Apple Watch app?
An Apple Watch companion, recording finishes from the wrist, is in development and not yet released. The phone app is fully standalone in the meantime.
